My research is focused on geochemical sampling and analysis of volcanoes around the globe. I am a Postdoctoral Researcher in Tephrochronology, based at the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art, started in January 2023. Our group’s role in the CAVES Africa Project is to use volcanic ash layers (tephra) to link archaeological and climate records in NW Africa. My role in this research will focus on collecting data to geochemically characterise the Azores and Canary Islands, helping fingerprint each eruption and assist in constraining the number and frequency of eruptions in this region.
In 2018 I started my PhD at the University of Southampton (funded as part of the SPITFIRE NERC Doctoral Training Programme). Here my project focused on a collection of samples from Tenerife, originating from deep below the volcano, are fragmented and ejected to the surface during explosive eruptions. Analysing the chemistry and minerology of these samples has given a new insight into the internal parts of the Tenerife magmatic system. Previous work from my undergraduate studies also includes an internship at the University of Hawaiʻi, where I was fortunate to be able to learn how to collect volcanic gas measurements at Kīlauea volcano.
